Convento dos Capuchos

Capuchos Convent (of Santa Cruz or Cortiça) was built in 1560 by D. Álvaro de Castro in fulfilment of a promise made to his father, D. João de Castro, the Viceroy of India. Hewn from rock and lined with cork, its tiny cells, chapel, dining room and various other areas bear witness to the modest daily lives of the Franciscan monks.
