Historic national Open returns to the DP World Tour after a seven-year absence
Return forms part of a three-year commitment, from 2027 to 2029, and ushers in a new era for the tournament, both on and off the course
Oitavos Dunes Links Golf in Cascais hosts the event for the first time since 2009
The Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisbon is returning to the DP World Tour in 2027. From 13 to 16 May, some of the best players on the international circuit will compete at Oitavos Dunes Links Golf in Cascais, marking the return of a DP World Tour event to Portugal five years after the final edition of the Portugal Masters in 2022.
The return of one of European golf’s most historic national championships also marks the beginning of a new era for the Open de Portugal. With the decisive support of Turismo de Portugal, the tournament returns to the highest level with the ambition of once again positioning Portugal among the leading destinations on the international golf calendar, showcasing the quality and diversity of the country’s tourism offering to players, fans and visitors from around the world.
It is in Cascais, with Lisbon as the associated destination, that this new chapter takes shape. The ambition is to create an event that goes beyond sporting competition by combining world-class golf, hospitality, gastronomy, entertainment and experiences, establishing the Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisbon as one of the major sporting and social events on the national calendar.
The setting chosen for this new chapter is Oitavos Dunes Links Golf, which will host the Open de Portugal for the fifth time, following the editions held in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Located within one of the most iconic landscapes on the Portuguese coast, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains, Oitavos Dunes will be the centrepiece of a week designed not only for golf fans, but also for partners, guests and spectators seeking to experience the tournament beyond the competition itself.
The 2027 edition will take place from 13 to 16 May, carrying 3,500 Race to Dubai points, and will mark the beginning of a three-year commitment that secures the Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisbon’s place on the DP World Tour calendar through to 2029.
The Open de Portugal dates back to 1953 and first joined the DP World Tour schedule in 1973, when it was staged at Penina Golf Club in the Algarve. Since then, the tournament has been played across 14 different courses in Portugal, including four editions at Oitavos Dunes Links Golf.
In 2020, the Open de Portugal was played as a dual-ranked event between the then European Tour and the Challenge Tour, now known as the DP World Tour and HotelPlanner Tour, respectively. Since then, the tournament has featured exclusively on the current HotelPlanner Tour schedule.
The return of the Open de Portugal to the DP World Tour and the Race to Dubai is the result of the joint support of Turismo de Portugal, Cascais City Council, Lisbon Tourism Association, the Lisbon Regional Tourism Board, and the Portuguese Golf Federation, united behind a project designed to restore Portugal’s regular presence on the circuit’s calendar while simultaneously building a new dimension for the tournament.

A NEW TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCE
This new chapter for the Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisbon also aims to bring the tournament closer to new audiences and transform the experience of watching golf live.
Throughout the week, Oitavos Dunes will be home not only to the competition itself but also to a broader entertainment offering, featuring new hospitality concepts, food and beverage experiences, entertainment and a variety of social spaces, creating reasons for visitors to stay before, during and after the golf.
Its location in Cascais will allow the Open experience to be closely linked to the destination’s identity, combining the sea, nature, gastronomy and lifestyle, while also benefiting from the proximity of Lisbon to attract both domestic and international audiences.
The objective is to preserve the history and prestige of the Open de Portugal while simultaneously giving it a contemporary expression and renewed relevance within Portugal’s sporting and social calendar.
The list of Open de Portugal champions includes some of the most recognised names in European golf, including Colin Montgomerie, Thomas Bjørn, Sam Torrance, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Howard Clark and Mark McNulty.
Garrick Higgo was the most recent winner of the Open de Portugal as a DP World Tour and Challenge Tour dual-ranked event in 2020, when the South African finished one stroke ahead of Spain’s Pep Angles at Royal Óbidos.
