There is also a train that connects the county of Cascais to the county of Oeiras and Lisbon. Carris Metropolitana connects not only these municipalities but also the municipality of Sintra.

Waste

Good waste management is essential to fight climate change. The municipality of Cascais has created structures such as smart bins and ecological islands, projects such as iREC - innovate recycling and ZERO WASTE and has hosted associations such as Refood and CCC - Creative Communities of Cascais, Cultural and Artistic Association.

Certifications

Since 2013, the municipality of Cascais has received awards related to sustainability. The Platinum award from the Green Destination Foundation in 2024 was the most recent one.

Food

The food industry has a significant environmental impact, mainly from its production and transportation. That's why it's essential to consume more organic, seasonal and local products. Industries and projects with these concerns are increasing in the municipality. The Hortas de Cascais and Cozinha €co - Criativa projects are excellent examples of this.

Water

Cascais has a long coastline of safe and quality beaches due to the development of programs such as +MAR and, consequently, being recognized by the Blue Flag program. This county also guarantees access to free drinkable water through its network of drinking fountains.

Climate Change

In addition to the above, the municipality of Cascais has projects focused on fighting climate change, such as the Covenant of Mayors (this one at European level), the AdapCascais Fund and Mini Cop.

Biodiversity and Nature

Green spaces represent about 45% of the county, the largest being the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park (around 30%). Part of these green spaces are dry meadows that help to combat the reduction of biodiversity. There are several projects designed to promote knowledge and preserve nature and biodiversity, such as Natura Observa, Oxigénio, Cascais BioUrbe, Quinta do Pisão, Pedra do Sal Environmental Interpretation Center and Cascais Nature Tourism Information Office.

Society

The vision for the municipality of Cascais is to be the “best place to live for a day or a lifetime”. To this end, the municipality has several projects that involve the community and visitors in this vision, such as FixCascais, Tutor do bairro and City Points Cascais. Another project has recently been created to reinforce the importance of more responsible travel, Cascais for Tomorrow. There are also various activities and tourist attractions that allow visitors to get to know the culture and lifestyle of this municipality.
